The Situation: A black-tie benefit took place inside of the theater and a large outdoor tent. The tent was used for dinner and a live auction. Reid Sound was asked to provide a sound system for the tent. The tent was approximately 100' x 60' with a stage set up on the long side. Four tent poles ran along the center. Flooring was placed in the parking lot before the tent was set-up and side-walls kept the rain out and the heat in. Tables were set up throughout the tent with a walkway opposite the stage. The System: The goal was to ensure that there was an even distribution of sound throughout the tent without excessive volume in any one area. The client wanted the sound to appear to come primarily from the stage area so that performers and speakers did not appear to be coming from “everywhere” and so that attention would be focused on the stage. Six speakers were set up along the long tent wall on the stage side. An additional six speakers were hung from the tent poles to act as a second row, or a delay row. These speakers, which were small and white so as to be unobtrusive, were set on a delay from the main row of speakers, ensuring that the sound from the second set of speakers would arrive at the back of the tent at the same time as the sound from the first set of speakers. In addition to localizing the sound “image” to the stage, this ensured that a consistent volume could be set. In other words, it was not necessary to turn up the main set of speakers to ensure that the people at the back of the tent could be heard. The system proved to be very effective. As one walked from the back of the tent to the front, there was no noticeable change in volume. This was precisely the desired result.
