It’s funny when people say that happiness is more important than money. Because what they’re really talking about is their OWN happiness. As soon as YOUR happiness affects THEIR money, that statement does not apply.

Flying Pork Barrels – The airline bailout enriches stockholders at the expense of taxpayers. by Steven E. Landsburg

So, what does the airline bailout accomplish? One thing and one thing onlyit enriches the millions of people who own airline stocks at the expense of the millions of others who don’t.

I just want to point out that over a week ago, I told my wife that now would probably be a GREAT time to invest in airline stocks, because while they have crashed to an all-time low, they would almost inevitably bounce back eventually, making them, in the long run, very profitable. It looks like the long run just got a lot shorter, and I didn’t get the chance to invest because I was told that it was too risky. Grumble…

Diary by Lucas Miller, Savoring New Yorkers’ newfound love for cops.

I really found this to be important. I’ve always felt that cops get a bad rap, even by me, and it’s not right. These are people who, even before this tragedy, put their lives at risk every day in order to protect us, and we often give them less respect than we give to the garbage man. I hope he’s right. I hope this goodwill towards the police does continue. I think they deserve it.

Julie pointed me in the direction of Modern Humorist – Fall 2001 TV Preview. For some reason, the following description of Dark Angel struck me as incredibly funny:

Jessica Alba returns for a second action-packed season as Max, a genetically engineered fisherwoman who chases, and is in turn chased by, a white whale. The white whale represents the ambiguity of fate.

Rudy Giuliani: Dont Be Afraid

I’ve always liked Giuliani. I’m gonna be sad to see him leave office.

ESPN.com: NBA – It’s official: Jordan to play for Wizards

Ummm….the Washington Wizards? That’s weird. Why didn’t he go to a GOOD team? Not that I know much about basketball, but….the Wizards?

If you haven’t already done so, DON’T upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer (I think it’s version 6). I can’t begin to tell you the number of times my computer has frozen and/or crashed from it. Grumble…

I’m applying for a job at Princeton University. It’s as a Theatre Shop Technician in the Program in Theatre and Dance. It seems like a job I’d probably enjoy a lot. I’ve worked with this department before, both as a guest lecturer and as a designer for one of their student directed shows. I like the people. I like working in an education setting. It’s a full time job, although I’m not sure of the schedule (it says that night and weekend hours would be required, which I don’t mind). The only thing is….

It feels like giving up. It feels like admitting defeat when it comes to the business. Reality says I need a job. I need money. And it’s a job in the field and it’s something I’d probably enjoy. But when I left my last job, I told myself that that would be my LAST job and that I wasn’t going to go back to work for someone else. So, going back sort of feels like quitting. Sure, I’d still run the business on the side, the way I used to, but somehow it wouldn’t be the same.

Should I do it? Of course, at this point, it’s all academic. It’s not like they’ve offered me the job, yet. I haven’t even interviewed. But if they did, should I take it?

Al-Qaida makes new call to arms

The Taliban-run Persian-language Anis newspaper said senior the Taliban minister had told people not to worry about possible U.S. strikes, because fresh holy warriors are volunteering to join the militia.

I wonder if these people realize how absolutely ridiculous they sound…

Reality TV Psychologists: People’s Protectors or Sleazy Shrinks?

This is good…..

Ondrusek says. “Entertainment since Sophocles has recounted and acted out dramas. That has been the model for entertainment up to present day. This is the first time we have been able to create a new form of drama by creating contexts for compelling behavior.”

Well, perhaps not the first time. Two thousand years ago, Roman producers created compelling drama by feeding people to lions.
